This is one of the hardest movies to make. It''s not an easy film for everybody. Its'' a movie about a teacher and a student, about the dynamic between the two, but instead of giving us Dangerous Minds, Dead Poets Society or Freedom Writers, this film asks us to think about the gritty relationship where the teacher makes you be your best but is someone you hate. This isn''t Stand and Deliver, where the teacher is likeable and where his passion is as relatable as wanting to free inner-city kids from the bondage of poverty. It''s about a passion for something as intensely personal, selfish and hedonistic as wanting the perfect sound. From the moment the usually affable J.K. Simmons says, "Not my tempo," you are on a roller-coaster ride with a ruthlessly demanding dictator of sorts. It''s sometimes hard to watch but endlessly intriguing.

Wow, 8.5 on IMDB? I think they did the math backwards and it should be a 1.5. I waited for a character to become likable, relatable, smile a little, or maybe even have a little depth, but nope, never happened. My only consolation is that I didn''t pay for the 1.5 hours that was just wasted on this meaningless toxic piece of garbage.

There was a good message buried deep in the movie, but it was heavily covered up by the overwhelming tirades of homosexual slurs and relentless abusive language that were spewed from the very few characters in the movie that had speaking roles. I know you don''t have to pay people as much if they don''t speak, but seriously?? There were 3 female characters in the whole movie that had sounds come out of their mouths and 2 of them were only in 1 scene!

I have actually enjoyed writing about how bad this movie was more than I enjoyed the movie. Perhaps this is the only joy that has come out of this horrendous waste of my evening.

Look, let''s set technical aspects aside, like how the kid wasn''t actually playing the drums, or how his car got flipped, but he managed to run to the gig (he''d have AT LEAST a broken leg). Instead, from a musician''s point of view, this rang so true it honestly made me remember what it took for me to WANT to play music. It took those hits, it took failures, and it took criticism and utter humiliation to get me to understand that practice means nothing if you don''t play what you practice, and practice what you play. Practice doesn''t make perfect if you just practice mistakes; perfect practice makes perfect. You mess it up? Do it again. You mess it up? One more time. You still messed up? Ten more times. A thousand more times. As. Many. Times. As. It. Takes.

And this is why musicians are so neurotic.

And this is why I love this movie and wiped nostalgic tears from my eyes at the end.

I watched this with my husband and teenage son. We were all viewing this from a non-musical background, so taking the music out of it, we were left with watching a horribly abusive man who may or may not have been any good but who definitely could have found other ways to educate those innocent, malleable minds he was a predator of. And make no mistake, that teacher was a stalker, searching out specific victims in the hopes of making himself great. ...and maybe the kids, if they didn''t kill themselves first.

This is a movie I would consider somewhat frustrating on certain levels as there are parts that will definitely leave you angry, uncomfortable, and awe struck all at the same time. I watched it with my son who is the drummer in his middle school jazz band as he saw the preview and was interested in seeing it. I would not suggest this as a kids movie as the language and the subject matter is very adult (may be worth you watching first to see if you think your child could handle it) That said if you watch it with your child, it does open some interesting discussion. This movie brings a fair bit into question I think and it does make you think. From the preview you can get the gist of the movie so I don''t feel I''m spoiling anything here. The movie makes you consider the very fine lines between "pushing someone to greatness" and completely demolishing them in the process and it flutters between those two things for much of the movie. Me and my son had a rather lengthy conversation about whether in the end the teacher''s "harsh approach" was vindicated as he drew from the young man every ounce of talent. Would the drummer still have practiced that hard or gotten as good as he did etc had the teacher been "easier"? Was there better ways to get the same results? Would the drummer have done what he does by the end regardless of what this teacher did? What is it that does make someone "great" and can greatness be achieved without suffering on some level? It sets up very interesting questions. Funny enough, as a mom, I found myself disagreeing with the teachers actions strongly (though pushing is good and I will agree I think always hearing "oh that was wonderful" is damaging to growth on a certain level) while my son actually defended some of the teachers actions (while feeling they were extreme and some of it was "too much") he could somewhat understand why the teacher was the way he was. All in all it was interesting, the drumming was PHENOMENAL and just on that level worth the watch, and the discussion it opened up was worth having. I think when a movie really makes you think and evaluate that that is what a good movie should do and I was certainly impressed on all accounts even if it was a tense movie to watch :)

Whiplash is about the relationship between a young jazz drummer Andrew (Miles Teller) and his teacher Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) who is the top Jazz instructor at the college. Fletcher runs his class like an army. He’s a perfectionist and relentless. When he walks into class all the band members jump to attention. He demands everything be perfect such as when he singles out a trombone player for being out of tune. He calls him names, makes fun of him, and then kicks him out of the band. The student breaks down and cries as he leaves. It turns out the kid wasn’t out of tune he just wanted to make an example out of him showing that he’s a bit of a sadist as well. Andrew’s problem is that he wants to be perfect as well. When they mix together it makes for an explosive situation. The movie asks what’s the difference between the pursuit of perfection and obsession and is either one good for the soul?

The film has two great performances from Teller and Simmons. Fletcher’s verbal abuse is hilarious as it is disturbing. He stands out for using and abusing his students and it even looks like he enjoys it. It’s also a very different kind role for him. He doesn’t usually get to play the lead and definitely not something like this. Teller on the other hand plays his role like a maniac. He’s relentless because he wants to be a great musician. It’s like he has a obsessive compulsive personality disorder.

It all makes for a unique tale.

If you love artificial drama, like reality TV, you will probably enjoy this.

I sort of had to watch it, like people slow down to look at accidents.

An instructor, verbally berates his students with the understanding that he thinks the ends justify the means. Now I think there are many tough instructors out there in various fields. But he''s over the top.

Quite a few people who have taught music in prestigous institutions have said he was over the stop.

The ending was supposed to somehow, in someway justify the instructor''s behavior.

The instructor was a great actor. Great at acting like a major a-hole. Props, I mean that.

The drum student didn''t have much personality. He wasn''t hateworthy, but I didn''t warm up to him.

And due to the fact most times anyone starting playing music, the instructor stopped them to call them a talentless motherless fagot, or something of the sort, the music seriously suffered. Was this supposed to make me appreciate jazz?

I give it 2 stars as art, because I think they tried really hard to make...something. But that doesn''t make it a good movie, IMO.
